Piper Randy Welch, from Easton, Maryland, welcomed the residents and guests to a ceremony commemorating the ninth anniversary of Patriot Day. Patriot Day was established right after 9/11 by the United States Congress to honor the military, police, firefighters and Emergency Medical Personnel who risk their lives everyday to protect ours.

The feature presentation of the day was the performance of the Marine ROTC Detachment from Woodbridge High School under the leadership of 1st Sgt (Ret) David W. Grinstead Sr. United States Marine Corp. Their performance of the MIA/POW missing service member ceremony brought goose bumps to many in the audience. The cadets were led by David Grinstead Jr. who captivated the audience with his command presence and knowledge of the meaning behind the presentation. It made all of us in the audience aware that there are many positive things about our youth of today.

The National Anthem and a medley featuring America the Beautiful was performed by Command Sergeant Major, (Ret) Greg Fuller, United States Army. Presentations were made by the new Bridgeville Police Chief Robert Longo, Jim Cina, representing the Bridgeville Fire Fighters and The final speaker was Robert Stuart, Director of the Sussex County EMS. After the closing prayer by Heritage Shore resident Reverend Tom Connar the piper played Amazing Grace thereby concluding the ceremony and he departed the ballroom playing ‘Going Home’.

All of us living in Heritage Shores are proud to recognize the 24/7 dedication and commitment of all of the members in law enforcement, the firefighters and EMS personnel to protect us. We also can’t thank enough the young men and women in the military service that risk their lives everyday to keep our great country free.

John Barr

Residents Rock the House with a Tribute to Elvis

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 259px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_lNHSvVkS73M/TH-cw4QQ_aI/AAAAAAAAAGE/paBKAFHdQLU/s320/elvis.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512296832473038242" />
The residents of Heritage Shores paid tribute to the one and only Elvis Presley. Most people know that the basic ingredients to any good chili recipe are ground beef, onions, peppers, tomatoes, herbs and spices. What many don't know, is that to add a unique touch to your chili recipe, you can add black coffee and bittersweet chocolate. If you are making a gallon of chili, you should add two ounces of the coffee and a quarter an ounce of the bittersweet chocolate. This will give your chili a nice base that will help to bridge all of your traditional chili flavors together.

Let me know if you have any questions about this or if you need any more information!

Host Your Next Event at Heritage Shores

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 230px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_lNHSvVkS73M/TGp0qxbbUSI/AAAAAAAAAF0/Rvrum8E-saI/s320/Clubhouse.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506341772585554210" />
Heritage Shores Club offers many special services and hosts an array of events, from corporate meetings, to private social events and large weddings. There are many different rooms throughout the clubhouse to choose from based on the size of your event and the type of food and beverage service that you intend to offer your guests.

The ballroom at Heritage Shores can accommodate up to 300 guests for a seated banquet to still have use of the spacious dance floor. For a cocktail reception, the ballroom can hold up to 450 people. If you are hosting a smaller function, Heritage Shores also has two more intimate rooms which can be rented for special functions. One of these rooms can accommodate up to 50 guests while the other holds up to 32 guests. These rooms are wonderful options for birthday parties, rehearsal dinners, bridal showers and any other type of party for your closest family and friends.

Another option is the Conference Room on the lower level of the clubhouse. This space is ideal for board meetings or small business meetings. It can hold up to 10 people and has amenities such as wi-fi and conference phones that can be used for your meeting as needed.

One of the most beautiful areas at the club is the Gazebo, which serves multiple functions. It is a popular location for wedding ceremonies and is a nice back drop for photos but is also often times the area that golf tournaments choose to use for their after golf banquet.

Regardless of the size of your event or which room you choose, the team of event specialists at Heritage Shores is here to ensure that your event is a success and to help you throughout the planning process. What this means for the Community of Heritage Shores and the surrounding town of Bridgeville is hopefully a change for the better. Our past chef, Frank Dubinski, has been retained as Chef de Cuisine due to the many talents he has and the quality of food being offered. The addition of Chef Travis Simmons will allow us to have multiple talents in the kitchen, his background varies from opening of restaurants and hotel operations to working in exclusive private clubs. Katie Simmons, a Western Golf Properties veteran, brings her sales abilities and Food and Beverage knowledge into the Catering role. Once your date is booked, Katie will work with our Banquet Manger, Debbie Martino, in ensure all of your expectations are met. Katie will take the details and assist in guiding your linen selection, table layouts, menus and much more.

As for Jason Feller, our new General Manager, his experience in the field started with his high school education in Towson, MD at Carver Center for Art and Technology. Having a love for culinary arts and original dream of becoming a chef he transferred into the magnet program and also held jobs at a local country club and restaurant. Jason has worked in every role in restaurants from washing dishes, working the sauté and broiler stations, bussing tables, serving, and bartending to running banquets and multiple dining rooms. Once entering College at the University of Delaware he took summer stints at Baltimore Country Club, Hyatt Regency Baltimore and Wilmington Country Club. At Wilmington Country Club he took a role as a Dining Room Supervisor and assisted in Managing the Casual and Formal Dining Rooms and is where he started his education of wines.

From Wilmington Country Club he moved to be the Beverage Manager at Atlanta Athletic Club, a premier club located north of Atlanta. While in Atlanta aside from the experience running the bars, he was also given the opportunity to run the a la carte casual dining room on property that was serving approximately 70,000 covers per year. In 2006 Jason moved to Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase Maryland. As the Clubhouse Manager Jason’s main oversight was in food and beverage operations. This included a busy banquet facility, three casual ala carte restaurants, fine dining and theme events. In addition to Food and Beverage his responsibilities included safety on property for members and employees, housekeeping, club activities, internal marketing including bulletins, website, emails and posters. During his time at Columbia Country Club he took part in creating standards of operation for a new 35,000 square foot family activities building, including the creation of a child minding facility, game rooms, exercise and fitness rooms, indoor pool, outdoor pool, ice-rink, poolside café and bowling center.

Jason is the proud husband of Wendy Tozer Feller and father of a 14 month old daughter McKenzie Ann. He looks forward to the move to Delaware and raising McKenzie in a wonderful family oriented environment.

Golf for a Worthwhile Cause!

On June 17th, 2010, Heritage Shores hosted the Spicer Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit Aubrey Spicer, daughter of fallen Georgetown police officer Chad Spicer. Sixteen teams turned out to golf for a worthwhile cause. Several companies also participated in sponsorships including our tournament at large sponsors National HVAC Service, Perdue and The L&L Company.

The ball drop took place on hole #8. Aubrey and her grandfather dropped 200 balls from over 65 feet high. This is the third year of celebrating and ringing in the New Year at the beautiful clubhouse. Wow! The residents partied until 1:00 am. What a great night filled with resolutions of a brighter new year ahead. I can’t think of any better place to spend those retirement years than at Heritage Shores. So don’t let yourself down keep that New Year’s resolution to come and check out the Heritage Shores Community. Maybe we’ll be ringing in 2011 with some new neighbors!

Happy New Year!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_lNHSvVkS73M/S1NYd4yAkJI/AAAAAAAAAEc/ZhCLxzWDBTY/s320/New+Years+Eve+1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427779246393168018" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_lNHSvVkS73M/S1NZElyszJI/AAAAAAAAAEs/WQlSlYyZjAo/s320/New+Years+Eve+2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5427779911310691474" />

The Lifestyles Committee Winter Charity Event

Photographed: Sherrey Maher, Carolyn Kirkley, Cathy Gorman, Nina Kover, Barbara Devine

On Thursday, December 17th the Heritage Shores Lifestyles Committee sponsored a Winter Charity Event to benefit the Delaware Food Bank.

The Delaware Food Bank is a Non-profit organization that distributes food to approximately 90,000 Delawareans annually. Yes we’ve all got one – someone we know and love who is just such a seasonal grouch! Moaning and groaning about everything. Well today’s their day to moan and groan even louder. A geothermal or ground-source heat pump is an electrically powered device that uses the natural heat storage ability of the earth and/or the earth’s ground water to heat and cool your home. Because they use the earth’s natural heat, they are among the most efficient and comfortable heating and cooling technologies currently available.

Like any type of heat pump, it simply moves heat energy from one place to another. Your refrigerator works using the same scientific principle. By using refrigeration, the geothermal heat pump removes heat energy stored in the earth and transfers it to your home. The earth has the ability to absorb and store heat energy. To use that stored energy, heat is extracted from the earth through a liquid medium and is pumped to the heat pump heat exchanger. There, the heat is used to heat your home. In the summer the process is reversed and indoor heat is extracted from your home and transferred to the earth through the liquid.

Ground source heat pumps rely on underground tubing to extract heat from either water or earth. A water ethanol mix circulates through tubing in vertical shafts and then passes through a heat pump. A heat pump can work as either a cooling or heating device, depending on which way refrigerant flows internally.

One very attractive thing about geothermal systems is that they use substantially less energy that conventional systems. And because it does not use any fossil fuels, a system like this is non-polluting with essentially no impact on either people or the environment. I hope this has helped you understand a little more about geothermal heat pumps and how they work.

Roger Smith
Project Construction Manager

The Holidays at Heritage Shores

The ornament pictured here was added to the Heritage Shores holiday decorations located at the Clubhouse. With relatives traveling from near and far you definitely want the short time together to be memorable. Now could be the perfect time to try that recipe you’ve been anxious to make that could really have a lasting impression on your entire family!

I’m often asked by my friends and family for recipes that I use in the restaurant and at home. Many of them are amazed on how easy most of the items are to make. One question I’m asked more often than not is “How do you make your risotto?” I grab a piece of paper and jot it down quickly for them and explain it as I’m doing so.

- 4 cups of homemade/canned chicken stock
- ¼ cup of diced yellow onion
- 1 cup Arborio rice
- ½ cup heavy cream

Above, is a very simple recipe for a homemade risotto. The method of preparation is simple but takes about 25 minutes to conduct. You simply start your risotto by sautéing the diced yellow onion in 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add your Arborio rice after the onions are translucent. Toast the rice for approximately one minute while stirring the rice continuously. Now you can start to add your chicken stock. However, you must add the stock a little at a time and you must continue to stir. The continuous stirring allows the gluten to be released and also allows the complete surface area to be used by the rice to absorb the stock. The chicken stock will generally be added throughout several stages of the entire process. Once all the stock is used and the rice is “al dente” then you must finish the risotto by adding the heavy cream.

Once you have completed all of these steps, you have made risotto!! Now it’s time to get your creative juices flowing as you can add just about anything to a risotto. Left over turkey and cranberry relish could make for a very nice “Autumn Risotto.” Have fun with this recipe and I’m anxious to here all the creations that everybody comes up with!!

Frank Dubinski
Executive Chef
Heritage Shores Golf Club

Fashion Show Anyone?

On October 29th the Red Hat Ladybugs of Heritage Shores sponsored a fashion show at Heritage Shores to benefit People’s Place, a Sussex County shelter for abused women, children and teens. Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. It has been celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and Canada since 1894. The first Labor Day parade occurred Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. The workers' unions chose the first Monday in September because it was halfway between Independence Day and Thanksgiving. The idea spread across the country, and some states designated Labor Day as a holiday before the federal holiday was created. President Grover Cleveland signed a law designating the first Monday in September as Labor Day nationwide. State Parks, swimming pools, and campgrounds are all quite busy on Labor Day, as vacationers take one last advantage of the waning hot season. September is the month that marks the beginning of autumn.

Heritage Shores, Not Your Ordinary Retirement Community

Looking for an ACTIVE LIFESTYLE?
Looking for an INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY?
Looking for FUN, EXCITEMENT and CREATIVITY?
LOOK NO FURTHER …
You can find it at Heritage Shores!

Not only does Heritage Shores sit on an Authur Hills inspired 18 hole golf course, it boasts many amenities to enhance your lifestyle. Visitors to our sales office tripled in numbers last week and we have executed 3 contracts with the past two weeks. Sales of our completed home inventory have greatly reduced the number of homes available for immediate delivery.

The first step to recovery has occurred with the stabilization of housing demand. This comes with some clearing of the foreclosure supply and a slight increase in new home sales.

As of June, $90 billion of the $789 billion stimulus package (11%) has entered the economy bringing some job stabilization and an increase in public improvements. All of this feeds the housing market. The first time homebuyer’s tax credit of $8000 also works to remove homes from the resale market and increase new home sales.

If you know anyone that might qualify for the first time homebuyer’s tax credit please refer him or her to www.federalhousingtaxcredit.com for full details. It is a tremendous program enabling people that would be otherwise unable to purchase to become homeowners or improving the buying power of more capable purchasers.

We are feeling confident that we are on the road to a marked improvement in our market and are excited to see renewed interest in our community and particularly the Providence built homes in Heritage Shores. Stop by and see us some time.

Exciting New Floor Plans

Providence of Brookfield Homes at Heritage Shores has some exciting news! The event which involves our club members inviting guests from outside our community to come and tackle our challenging Arthur Hills design golf course for 45 holes of golf contested over two days. The club saw 34 members bring a guest for a total of 68 players divided into 6 flights (all Scottish themed) based off of their total team handicap and playing five 9 hole matches.

The actual event started on Friday at 8:00am under dreary and misty skies, but soon turned to sunshine and a slight breeze that made the day very pleasant for all the competitors. Several matches were played and a BBQ lunch was enjoyed. You could hear the excitement in the air as teams were already starting to plan their strategies for the final day’s matches. It was the conclusion of golf for the day, but not the fun, as then the players headed over to the clubhouse to partake in another excellent BBQ meal provided for them along with some skills competitions provided by the golf staff.

There were many laughs and jokes shared along with numerous stories of how their matches unfolded during the day. It was one great day done, with only better to come.
Saturday has arrived and still 18 holes to go until we can determine a winner from each flight to proceed on to a 3 hole shootout to determine the champion of champions.

The scores were posted, another outstanding BBQ lunch was provided and the sighs, laughs, jubilation and disappointment started to set in. At 2:00pm the winners were announced, which congratulations were extended, but it was not quite over yet as we now how to prepare to do battle again for a 3 hole shootout to determine our overall champion. There was a sense of “is this over yet”, but also a “man, I don’t ever want this event to end”.

At 2:45pm the 6 flight winners made their way to the 16th tee, a demanding Par 3 to begin the final trek of “who’s the best”. The 3 hole shootout involves all 6 teams playing together in an alternate shot format with two teams being eliminated on the 16th hole, two team being eliminated on the 17th hole and our champion crowned at the conclusion of the 18th hole. With a large gallery following the play, it felt as though we were at a Tour event. After the winners were deemed, the players went home to recharge for a night of fun.

At 6:30pm the doors to the ballroom opened and the room was decorated with golfing décor and pictures of the event on their designated tables. There was a long night ahead as first there were cocktails and appetizers for the participants and their significant others to enjoy followed by the announcements from the golf staff of all the flight winners and last but not least our overall Champions. At the conclusion of awards was an outstanding Prime Rib dinner with numerous sides for all to enjoy. Now the real fun; it was time to put on those dancing shoes as a DJ played music and everyone twisted and shouted to well into the night, leaving everyone saying and reminding each other, “I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR”.

The following are the results:

Putting Contest:
Guest – Charles Bilezikijian, Jr
Member – Tommy Johnson

Par 3 Shootout:
Guest – Doug Hamilton, Jr
Member – Ozzie Van Helmond

St. Andrews Flight
Guest – Alan Parker
Member – George Phipps

Turnberry Flight
Guest – Stanley Botts
Member – John Allen, Jr

Carnoustie Flight
Guest – Broderick Reynolds
Member – Gerry LaForge

Royal Troon Flight
Guest – Andrew Baldwin
Member – Steve Baldwin

Royal Dornoch Flight
Guest – Matt Dayton OVERALL CHAMPIONS
Member – Maury Morin

Loch Lomond Flight
Guest – John Torkelson
Member – Larry Kaplan

Celebrate Father's Day at Heritage Shores

Celebrate Dad
with a Special Father’s Day Brunch
Sunday, June 21st
from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Enjoy an Afternoon of Food and Family Set Amongst the
Beautiful Surroundings of Heritage Shores Club

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349126127677650034" style="WIDTH: 170px; We had a windy but beautiful day for filming and amazing homeowners that came out to take part in the filming. Providence Homes is so grateful for the wonderful people that live in our community. Thanks again to all that were involved. I have had several requests to post the commercial here on the blog, so below is a link to the commercial. Look for it to air also on WMDT 47 and the CW 3. There are five tees to choose from that allows players of all skill levels to enjoy the course. The course is a classic links style with water hazards on 17 of the 18 holes and has over 75 bunkers. The wind at Heritage Shores plays a factor on every day and makes the course play different from day to day.

One of the golf holes that goes into making Heritage Shores one of the best courses in the area is the Par 4 Fifth Hole. It measures 465 yards from the back tees. There is a pond on your left hand side as you tee off, but there is a generous fairway for your ball to find. Your approach shot is where the fun begins on this hole, the fairway is bisected with an environmental area that starts 80 yards from the green and is surrounded by a group of trees on both sides of the fairway. Around the green there is a bunker on the left, with collection areas on the right hand side that offers golfers many options for their next shot to the green. On the green a player will find a green with subtle breaks that slopes from back to front.

Along with the Par 4 Fifth Hole, the collection of par 3’s at Heritage Shores are among the best collection of these holes in the area. Included in these par 3’s is the 16th hole which is perhaps the most beautiful hole at the course. It measures 218 yards from the back tees and is perfectly fit between houses on the right and hills on the left that frame the hole magnificently. There is a bunker on the front part of the green that stretches along the right hand side and a collection area on the left hand side.

The last great feature of Heritage Shores is the immaculate condition that the golf course is kept in. The greens at Heritage Shores are among the finest on the Eastern Shore, and for a golf course that is fairly new all the credit goes to the Superintendent Dave Clem and his staff. Heritage Shores with its condition and great golf holes is truly a gem in Sussex County and a course that will be enjoyed by all players of all skill levels.

Upcoming Events at Heritage Shores Club

Below is a list of events being hosted at the Heritage Shores Clubhouse that are open to the public. Spring-cleaning is a tradition that allows us to freshen up our homes and get a head start on the hectic seasons of spring and summer.

Do you need help spring-cleaning? Believe it or not, spring-cleaning is more than just cleaning and disinfecting areas of your home not normally cleaned. It's all about combining thorough cleaning and organization of your entire home, including outdoor and typically unseen areas from the living room to the laundry room.

If we're truly honest with ourselves, we'll admit our normal housecleaning routine can be lax and infrequent. Spring-cleaning will ensure you make up for those days of sliding a dust rag carelessly across the dining room table simply to remove the appearance of dust.

Tackling your spring-cleaning project is simple. First, determine if you'll have any help. If yes, your helpers can assist with creating your Spring-Cleaning Project Plan to include the rooms, tasks and tools you'll need to get the job done. (If you'll be tackling spring-cleaning alone, you might want to consider scheduling your project tasks over a few weeks to avoid burnout and back aches.)

Pick a day, or a series of days or weekends when you'll complete your spring-cleaning tasks. If possible, don't bleach floors or bathroom surfaces on a day when you can't open windows and properly ventilate the area. Also consider completing any outdoor spring-cleaning projects first to avoid staining freshly cleaned walls or carpets with outside debris.

Here are a few of the most critical items you will want to either complete or consider completing during your spring-cleaning:

Get rid of items you no longer need or use!

Change your furnace filter (try and do this monthly).

Wipe down baseboards, molding, air vents, furnace return, window and doorframes, windowsills, door and room thresholds.

Clean every lamp, ceiling fan and light fixture, inside and outside.

Launder or dry clean all drapes and linens.

Wash the windows, inside and outside.

Inspect and clean under all raised furniture and beds.

Thoroughly clean all art, pictures or décor on the walls and all decorative items on furniture or shelves.

Clean your fireplace inside and out.

By now you've likely found items you haven't seen in years and cleaned areas you didn't know you had. The point of spring-cleaning is to get into absolutely everything into your home. Don't hold back and be sure you take your time to carefully complete each task for each room. You'll be glad you did. And finally, try to enjoy your spring-cleaning project. Most of us find pleasure in standing back to see a job well done and complete.

The New Kincaid Model

Come check out Providence’s newest model home, the Kincaid. This is my first blog message for Providence at Heritage Shores. I would like to first introduce myself. My name is Roger Smith and I have been with this community, as the Construction Project Manager, since its inception in 2004. I consider myself very fortunate to build homes in a community as beautiful as Heritage Shores. The focus of my writing is the value of owning an Energy Star qualified home. There’s a substantial amount of quality products and installation practices that are required in order to be labeled as an energy efficient home.

I could go on and on about Energy Star because there is a ton to know about it. But for now, I’m just going to discuss the benefits of buying a new Energy Star qualified home. I will discuss other aspects of Energy Star in future posts.

To earn the Energy Star, a home must meet guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than standard homes. This promotes better over all performance and delivers better protection from cold, heat, drafts and moisture. The major components of your home are included in this rating process (insulation, heating and cooling systems, windows, etc.) I don’t think there is anything worse than having to turn up the heat because of a drafty home in the dead of winter. Energy efficient homes help ensure consistent temperatures; improve indoor air quality and greater durability.

Compared with standard homes, an Energy Star qualified home uses less energy. This promotes lower ownership cost with an annual savings of $200 to $400 according to the EPA. Over an average of 7 to 8 years in your home, this adds up to thousands of dollars saved on utility bills. You could consider this a smart investment for you and your family. More than 5,000 homebuilders have partnered with EPA to build more that 840,000 Energy Star labeled homes. It’s estimated by the end of the decade, more than 2 million homes are expected to earn the Energy Star. We are a publicly traded company with over 50 years in the homebuilding industry. Providence is the business group of Brookfield responsible for the development and homebuilding operations in active adult communities. We have successfully completed two communities in Virginia – Dunbarton in Bristow and HiddenBrooke in Springfield. We are currently creating a golf course neighborhood - Heritage Shores located in Bridgeville, Delaware. Just minutes from the Delaware beaches and the Bay Bridge, Heritage Shores provides an environment close to the things you love …golf, fishing, boating, strolling the boardwalk, lounging on the beach, fitness center, indoor pool, tennis, bike and walking trails and much more. Many of these things right within the community. We offer a variety of home styles and floor plans starting in the low $200,000s and have a tremendous model presentation for your enjoyment.
