What is a Geothermal Heat Pump?

One of the most common questions is “What is a geothermal heat pump and how does it work?” Geothermal heat pumps are similar to ordinary heat pumps, but use the ground instead of outside air to provide heating and air conditioning. A geothermal or ground-source heat pump is an electrically powered device that uses the natural heat storage ability of the earth and/or the earth’s ground water to heat and cool your home. Because they use the earth’s natural heat, they are among the most efficient and comfortable heating and cooling technologies currently available.

Like any type of heat pump, it simply moves heat energy from one place to another. Your refrigerator works using the same scientific principle. By using refrigeration, the geothermal heat pump removes heat energy stored in the earth and transfers it to your home. The earth has the ability to absorb and store heat energy. To use that stored energy, heat is extracted from the earth through a liquid medium and is pumped to the heat pump heat exchanger. There, the heat is used to heat your home. In the summer the process is reversed and indoor heat is extracted from your home and transferred to the earth through the liquid.

Ground source heat pumps rely on underground tubing to extract heat from either water or earth. A water ethanol mix circulates through tubing in vertical shafts and then passes through a heat pump. A heat pump can work as either a cooling or heating device, depending on which way refrigerant flows internally.

One very attractive thing about geothermal systems is that they use substantially less energy that conventional systems. And because it does not use any fossil fuels, a system like this is non-polluting with essentially no impact on either people or the environment. I hope this has helped you understand a little more about geothermal heat pumps and how they work.

Restaurant Quality Food at Home!!

As the holidays are approaching I know that everyone is going to be spending a lot of time with their families. With relatives traveling from near and far you definitely want the short time together to be memorable. Now could be the perfect time to try that recipe you’ve been anxious to make that could really have a lasting impression on your entire family!

I’m often asked by my friends and family for recipes that I use in the restaurant and at home. Many of them are amazed on how easy most of the items are to make. One question I’m asked more often than not is “How do you make your risotto?” I grab a piece of paper and jot it down quickly for them and explain it as I’m doing so.

- 4 cups of homemade/canned chicken stock
- ¼ cup of diced yellow onion
- 1 cup Arborio rice
- ½ cup heavy cream

Above, is a very simple recipe for a homemade risotto. The method of preparation is simple but takes about 25 minutes to conduct. You simply start your risotto by sautéing the diced yellow onion in 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add your Arborio rice after the onions are translucent. Toast the rice for approximately one minute while stirring the rice continuously. Now you can start to add your chicken stock. However, you must add the stock a little at a time and you must continue to stir. The continuous stirring allows the gluten to be released and also allows the complete surface area to be used by the rice to absorb the stock. The chicken stock will generally be added throughout several stages of the entire process. Once all the stock is used and the rice is “al dente” then you must finish the risotto by adding the heavy cream.

Once you have completed all of these steps, you have made risotto!! Now it’s time to get your creative juices flowing as you can add just about anything to a risotto. Left over turkey and cranberry relish could make for a very nice “Autumn Risotto.” Have fun with this recipe and I’m anxious to here all the creations that everybody comes up with!!

Enjoy the Labor Day Weekend!

Labor Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September in the United States since the 1880’s. Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. It has been celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and Canada since 1894. The first Labor Day parade occurred Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. The workers' unions chose the first Monday in September because it was halfway between Independence Day and Thanksgiving. The idea spread across the country, and some states designated Labor Day as a holiday before the federal holiday was created. President Grover Cleveland signed a law designating the first Monday in September as Labor Day nationwide. State Parks, swimming pools, and campgrounds are all quite busy on Labor Day, as vacationers take one last advantage of the waning hot season. September is the month that marks the beginning of autumn.

The First Step to Economic Recovery

We hesitate to rush to a conclusion but we have many positive signs that the housing market is headed to recovery. Visitors to our sales office tripled in numbers last week and we have executed 3 contracts with the past two weeks. Sales of our completed home inventory have greatly reduced the number of homes available for immediate delivery.

The first step to recovery has occurred with the stabilization of housing demand. This comes with some clearing of the foreclosure supply and a slight increase in new home sales.

As of June, $90 billion of the $789 billion stimulus package (11%) has entered the economy bringing some job stabilization and an increase in public improvements. All of this feeds the housing market. The first time homebuyer’s tax credit of $8000 also works to remove homes from the resale market and increase new home sales.

If you know anyone that might qualify for the first time homebuyer’s tax credit please refer him or her to www.federalhousingtaxcredit.com for full details. It is a tremendous program enabling people that would be otherwise unable to purchase to become homeowners or improving the buying power of more capable purchasers.

We are feeling confident that we are on the road to a marked improvement in our market and are excited to see renewed interest in our community and particularly the Providence built homes in Heritage Shores. Stop by and see us some time.

2009 Men’s Member Guest – The Premier Men’s Event of the Year

Heritage Shores Club was host to the Premier Men’s event of 2009, The Men’s Member Guest. The event which involves our club members inviting guests from outside our community to come and tackle our challenging Arthur Hills design golf course for 45 holes of golf contested over two days. The club saw 34 members bring a guest for a total of 68 players divided into 6 flights (all Scottish themed) based off of their total team handicap and playing five 9 hole matches.

The actual event started on Friday at 8:00am under dreary and misty skies, but soon turned to sunshine and a slight breeze that made the day very pleasant for all the competitors. Several matches were played and a BBQ lunch was enjoyed. You could hear the excitement in the air as teams were already starting to plan their strategies for the final day’s matches. It was the conclusion of golf for the day, but not the fun, as then the players headed over to the clubhouse to partake in another excellent BBQ meal provided for them along with some skills competitions provided by the golf staff.

There were many laughs and jokes shared along with numerous stories of how their matches unfolded during the day. It was one great day done, with only better to come.
Saturday has arrived and still 18 holes to go until we can determine a winner from each flight to proceed on to a 3 hole shootout to determine the champion of champions.

The scores were posted, another outstanding BBQ lunch was provided and the sighs, laughs, jubilation and disappointment started to set in. At 2:00pm the winners were announced, which congratulations were extended, but it was not quite over yet as we now how to prepare to do battle again for a 3 hole shootout to determine our overall champion. There was a sense of “is this over yet”, but also a “man, I don’t ever want this event to end”.

At 2:45pm the 6 flight winners made their way to the 16th tee, a demanding Par 3 to begin the final trek of “who’s the best”. The 3 hole shootout involves all 6 teams playing together in an alternate shot format with two teams being eliminated on the 16th hole, two team being eliminated on the 17th hole and our champion crowned at the conclusion of the 18th hole. With a large gallery following the play, it felt as though we were at a Tour event. After the winners were deemed, the players went home to recharge for a night of fun.

At 6:30pm the doors to the ballroom opened and the room was decorated with golfing décor and pictures of the event on their designated tables. There was a long night ahead as first there were cocktails and appetizers for the participants and their significant others to enjoy followed by the announcements from the golf staff of all the flight winners and last but not least our overall Champions. At the conclusion of awards was an outstanding Prime Rib dinner with numerous sides for all to enjoy. Now the real fun; it was time to put on those dancing shoes as a DJ played music and everyone twisted and shouted to well into the night, leaving everyone saying and reminding each other, “I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR”.

HERITAGE SHORES GOLF COURSE...THE GEM OF SUSSEX COUNTY

The golf course which opened in July 2007 was designed by Arthur Hills (one of leading golf course architects in the nation) stretches to 7,005 yards from the back tees. There are five tees to choose from that allows players of all skill levels to enjoy the course. The course is a classic links style with water hazards on 17 of the 18 holes and has over 75 bunkers. The wind at Heritage Shores plays a factor on every day and makes the course play different from day to day.

One of the golf holes that goes into making Heritage Shores one of the best courses in the area is the Par 4 Fifth Hole. It measures 465 yards from the back tees. There is a pond on your left hand side as you tee off, but there is a generous fairway for your ball to find. Your approach shot is where the fun begins on this hole, the fairway is bisected with an environmental area that starts 80 yards from the green and is surrounded by a group of trees on both sides of the fairway. Around the green there is a bunker on the left, with collection areas on the right hand side that offers golfers many options for their next shot to the green. On the green a player will find a green with subtle breaks that slopes from back to front.

Along with the Par 4 Fifth Hole, the collection of par 3’s at Heritage Shores are among the best collection of these holes in the area. Included in these par 3’s is the 16th hole which is perhaps the most beautiful hole at the course. It measures 218 yards from the back tees and is perfectly fit between houses on the right and hills on the left that frame the hole magnificently. There is a bunker on the front part of the green that stretches along the right hand side and a collection area on the left hand side.

The last great feature of Heritage Shores is the immaculate condition that the golf course is kept in. The greens at Heritage Shores are among the finest on the Eastern Shore, and for a golf course that is fairly new all the credit goes to the Superintendent Dave Clem and his staff. Heritage Shores with its condition and great golf holes is truly a gem in Sussex County and a course that will be enjoyed by all players of all skill levels.

Tips for Spring Cleaning

The flowers are blooming, the birds are serenading, and our house still feels like it's stuck with winter blues. Spring-cleaning is a tradition that allows us to freshen up our homes and get a head start on the hectic seasons of spring and summer.
Do you need help spring-cleaning? Believe it or not, spring-cleaning is more than just cleaning and disinfecting areas of your home not normally cleaned. It's all about combining thorough cleaning and organization of your entire home, including outdoor and typically unseen areas from the living room to the laundry room.

If we're truly honest with ourselves, we'll admit our normal housecleaning routine can be lax and infrequent. Spring-cleaning will ensure you make up for those days of sliding a dust rag carelessly across the dining room table simply to remove the appearance of dust.
Tackling your spring-cleaning project is simple. First, determine if you'll have any help. If yes, your helpers can assist with creating your Spring-Cleaning Project Plan to include the rooms, tasks and tools you'll need to get the job done. (If you'll be tackling spring-cleaning alone, you might want to consider scheduling your project tasks over a few weeks to avoid burnout and back aches.)

Pick a day, or a series of days or weekends when you'll complete your spring-cleaning tasks. If possible, don't bleach floors or bathroom surfaces on a day when you can't open windows and properly ventilate the area. Also consider completing any outdoor spring-cleaning projects first to avoid staining freshly cleaned walls or carpets with outside debris.
Here are a few of the most critical items you will want to either complete or consider completing during your spring-cleaning:
  1. Get rid of items you no longer need or use!

  2. Change your furnace filter (try and do this monthly).

  3. Wipe down baseboards, molding, air vents, furnace return, window and doorframes, windowsills, door and room thresholds.

  4. Clean every lamp, ceiling fan and light fixture, inside and outside.

  5. Launder or dry clean all drapes and linens.

  6. Wash the windows, inside and outside.

  7. Inspect and clean under all raised furniture and beds.

  8. Thoroughly clean all art, pictures or décor on the walls and all decorative items on furniture or shelves.

  9. Clean your fireplace inside and out.

By now you've likely found items you haven't seen in years and cleaned areas you didn't know you had. The point of spring-cleaning is to get into absolutely everything into your home. Don't hold back and be sure you take your time to carefully complete each task for each room. You'll be glad you did. And finally, try to enjoy your spring-cleaning project. Most of us find pleasure in standing back to see a job well done and complete.

The Value of Energy Star

This is my first blog message for Providence at Heritage Shores. I would like to first introduce myself. My name is Roger Smith and I have been with this community, as the Construction Project Manager, since its inception in 2004. I consider myself very fortunate to build homes in a community as beautiful as Heritage Shores. The focus of my writing is the value of owning an Energy Star qualified home. There’s a substantial amount of quality products and installation practices that are required in order to be labeled as an energy efficient home.

I could go on and on about Energy Star because there is a ton to know about it. But for now, I’m just going to discuss the benefits of buying a new Energy Star qualified home. I will discuss other aspects of Energy Star in future posts.

To earn the Energy Star, a home must meet guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than standard homes. This promotes better over all performance and delivers better protection from cold, heat, drafts and moisture. The major components of your home are included in this rating process (insulation, heating and cooling systems, windows, etc.) I don’t think there is anything worse than having to turn up the heat because of a drafty home in the dead of winter. Energy efficient homes help ensure consistent temperatures; improve indoor air quality and greater durability.

Compared with standard homes, an Energy Star qualified home uses less energy. This promotes lower ownership cost with an annual savings of $200 to $400 according to the EPA. Over an average of 7 to 8 years in your home, this adds up to thousands of dollars saved on utility bills. You could consider this a smart investment for you and your family. More than 5,000 homebuilders have partnered with EPA to build more that 840,000 Energy Star labeled homes. It’s estimated by the end of the decade, more than 2 million homes are expected to earn the Energy Star. Providence of Brookfield Home has been a part of this trend and will continue to produce value and quality in each home we build.

Thanks for reading,

Roger Smith

A Note from the President

Welcome to the newest communication vehicle for Providence of Brookfield Homes. We are a publicly traded company with over 50 years in the homebuilding industry. Providence is the business group of Brookfield responsible for the development and homebuilding operations in active adult communities. We have successfully completed two communities in Virginia – Dunbarton in Bristow and HiddenBrooke in Springfield. We are currently creating a golf course neighborhood - Heritage Shores located in Bridgeville, Delaware. Just minutes from the Delaware beaches and the Bay Bridge, Heritage Shores provides an environment close to the things you love …golf, fishing, boating, strolling the boardwalk, lounging on the beach, fitness center, indoor pool, tennis, bike and walking trails and much more. Many of these things right within the community. We offer a variety of home styles and floor plans starting in the low $200,000s and have a tremendous model presentation for your enjoyment. Visit us on the web at http://www.providenceofbrookfieldhomes.com/ or visit our Sales Cottage at 23 White Pelican Court, Bridgeville, DE. Call for directions or further information (302) 337-1040. Our winter hours are 10 to 5 daily. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
